Why

A Nutri-Grain bar is a soft-baked pastry with fruit filling in the middle. The crust is the product. Whatever else changes between flavours and countries, the crust has to be a dough that stays chewy for months in a wrapper, and the flour in it is wheat.

The US bar goes further than most. The published crust ingredients for the Strawberry Soft Baked Breakfast Bar are: whole grain oats, enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), soybean oil, whole wheat flour, dextrose, fructose, sugar, calcium carbonate, vegetable glycerin, invert sugar, whey, soluble corn fiber, cellulose, salt, natural flavor, potassium bicarbonate, a vitamin blend, wheat bran, mono- and diglycerides, soy lecithin, wheat gluten, carrageenan, iron and guar gum. The filling is invert sugar, corn syrup, vegetable glycerin, sugar, strawberry puree concentrate, modified food starch, sodium citrate, vegetable juice for colour, sodium alginate, natural flavor, citric acid, dicalcium phosphate, methylcellulose and lemon juice concentrate.

Count the wheat: enriched wheat flour, whole wheat flour, wheat bran and vital wheat gluten. That last one is the giveaway. Vital wheat gluten is isolated gluten protein, added deliberately to give the crust its soft, slightly springy chew. It is not a contaminant, it is not a trace, and it is not something a reformulation is likely to remove, because it is doing structural work that nothing else in the recipe does.

The allergen statement says the same thing plainly: CONTAINS WHEAT, MILK AND SOY INGREDIENTS. There is no ambiguity to resolve and nobody to ring.

The oats are a second problem, not a reason for hope. Whole grain oats are the first crust ingredient in the US bar. Oats are not a gluten grain, but ordinary commodity oats are grown, transported and milled alongside wheat, and Kellanova does not describe these as certified gluten-free oats. On a bar that already declares wheat, this is academic. It matters if you are reading across to other products in the range and assuming an oat base means a safe base.

The UK bar is a different recipe with the same answer. UK Nutri-Grain Strawberry lists a strawberry filling of around 43%, then cereal flours of around 31% including wheat, sugar, vegetable oils, invert sugar syrup, dextrose, calcium carbonate, skimmed milk powder, salt, stabiliser, raising agent, soy lecithin and added vitamins and iron. Wheat is in bold on the pack, as UK labelling requires. The Nutri-Grain Bakes and Elevenses formats, which are the soft-baked morning products, run on wheat flour plus whole oats, with some reformulated versions adding barley malt extract on top of the wheat.

Kellanova is not silent on gluten as a company. It publishes a gluten-free range in several markets, Corn Flakes Gluten Free and Coco Pops Gluten Free in Australia and New Zealand among them, and Special K Gluten Free in the US. So this is a company that will make and label a gluten-free product when it has one. There is no gluten-free Nutri-Grain on any of those lists. The absence is consistent with the panels rather than a gap in disclosure.

Where it varies

The product changes shape from country to country. The verdict does not move.

The one thing genuinely worth carrying across borders: if you are used to the UK Nutri-Grain and you are looking at an American one, or the other way round, you are looking at a different recipe with different fruit content and a different crust. Neither of them is safe, so the difference is only useful for knowing that a verdict you read on a US page is not automatically a UK verdict. On this particular product, it happens to be.

How much risk is this?

Celiac disease: a hard no, with no version, flavour, size or market that works. The US bar contains isolated wheat gluten as a named ingredient, which is about as far from borderline as a product can get. There is no partial-portion argument to make here.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity: also a no. This is a wheat product with added gluten protein, so it sits at the higher end of what you would be avoiding, not the trace end.

Wheat allergy: the clearest case of all. Wheat is a declared allergen on the pack in both the US and the UK, in the Contains line and in bold respectively.

Where this catches people out: the health framing. Nutri-Grain is marketed on whole grains, fibre and added vitamins, and it lives in the breakfast aisle next to products people associate with careful eating. None of that has any bearing on gluten. "Whole grain" and "made with real fruit" describe a wheat bar. Similarly, the bars are a school and lunchbox staple, so they turn up in shared snack boxes and office kitchens where a quick glance at the front of the wrapper tells you nothing.

What to have instead

The gluten-free soft-baked breakfast bar category is well stocked now, which was not true a few years ago:

  • MadeGood Mornings Soft Baked Breakfast Bars
Certified gluten-free, made with gluten-free oats, and free from the top nine allergens. The closest everyday replacement for the lunchbox and the desk drawer, in blueberry, chocolate chip and cinnamon bun.
  • Bobo's PB&J Oat Snacks
An oat crust with a real fruit filling in the middle, which is structurally the closest thing to a Nutri-Grain. Baked with purity protocol oats in a dedicated gluten-free facility and certified by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization. They contain peanuts, so they are not a nut-free-classroom option.
  • Nature's Bakery Gluten Free Fig BarsYes
Soft-baked, fruit-filled, twin-pack format, certified gluten-free and nut-free. The nearest match on texture and the one most likely to be in an ordinary supermarket.
  • Bobo's Oat Bars and Oatmeal Bites
Same dedicated facility and certification, if you want the oaty format without the peanut butter.
  • Nature's Path Organic Toaster PastriesNot gluten-free
If it is really the fruit-filled-pastry idea you want rather than the bar, these are certified gluten-free and widely stocked.
  • Certified gluten-free oats and fruit, made at homeYes
A tray of oat bars with jam swirled through takes twenty minutes and costs a fraction of any of the above. It also solves flavours nobody manufactures gluten-free.
Do not swap to these

Pop-Tarts (every variety is wheat, there is no gluten-free one), Special K bars and cereal (US Special K lists wheat gluten by name), Frosted Flakes and most standard Kellogg's cereals (barley malt), and any "granola" or "cereal" bar without a claim, because barley malt extract is endemic in that aisle and will not appear in a US Contains line.

Is any Nutri-Grain flavour gluten-free? No. The flavour changes the filling, not the crust, and the crust is where the wheat is. Strawberry, blueberry, apple cinnamon, mixed berry, cherry and the Bakes and Elevenses formats are all wheat-based.

Are Nutri-Grain bars gluten-free in the UK? No. UK packs list wheat in the cereal blend and show it in bold as an allergen, and some Bakes recipes add barley malt extract as well.

What is "wheat gluten" doing on the ingredient list? It is vital wheat gluten, isolated gluten protein, added to give a soft-baked crust structure and chew. It is common in soft-baked bars and in supermarket bread. Its presence is the single most conclusive line on the panel.

Are the oats in Nutri-Grain gluten-free oats? They are not described as certified gluten-free, which means they are ordinary commodity oats and carry the usual wheat cross-contact risk from the field and the mill. On a bar that already declares wheat this changes nothing, but it is worth knowing before you assume an oat-based product is a safe one.

Is Nutri-Grain healthier than a Pop-Tart? Slightly, on fibre and sugar, and irrelevantly on gluten. Both are wheat products and both are out. If the question behind the question is what to give a child with celiac disease for breakfast, the certified bars listed above are the answer.

Does Kellanova make anything gluten-free? Yes. It publishes gluten-free lines in several markets, including Special K Gluten Free in the US and Corn Flakes Gluten Free and Coco Pops Gluten Free in Australia and New Zealand. That is why the absence of a gluten-free Nutri-Grain is informative rather than an oversight.

Overall source tier: C, verdict not-gluten-free. The evidence is the manufacturer's own published ingredient statement and allergen declaration, and nothing further is needed. A product that names vital wheat gluten on the panel and prints CONTAINS WHEAT on the box has answered the question itself. No celiac organisation has ruled on Nutri-Grain, and none has needed to.

Last verified: 23 August 2026. Recipes change and pack sizes differ between markets. If Kellanova ever launches a gluten-free Nutri-Grain it will say so on the box, which is exactly what to look for. The wrapper in your hand outranks this page.
