How we check, and what the evidence tiers mean

Every verdict on this site carries a letter. It says what class of evidence the answer rests on, so you can weigh it yourself instead of trusting us.

TierWhat it means
AThe manufacturer has addressed gluten directly, or a certification body has tested the product. The strongest evidence available.
BA national celiac organisation has ruled on it: Beyond Celiac, the Celiac Disease Foundation or Coeliac UK.
CA published ingredient label, or a regulation. Tells you what is in the product, not what the maker will vouch for.
DSecondary reporting only. Blogs, forums and screening databases, including celiac.com, which is a commercial publisher rather than a celiac organisation.

The four verdicts

Gluten-free and not gluten-free mean what they say. Depends means there is a real split, by country, product line or preparation, and the page tells you how to work out which one you are holding. Unverified means nobody has confirmed it: no gluten grain is declared, but the manufacturer publishes no gluten statement. We publish that rather than guess, and the page tells you how to settle it yourself.

What we will not do

We do not soften a "no" into a "probably", and we do not harden an unknown into a "yes". We do not recommend a product as a swap if another page on this site refuses to clear it. Every page carries the date it was last checked, because manufacturers reformulate without notice and the label in your hand always outranks this site.
