Why

Grenadine has a reputation problem: people assume a bright red bar syrup must be full of mystery ingredients. The ingredient panels are actually short, and none of them run through a gluten grain.

There are two kinds of grenadine on the shelf, and neither contains gluten. The traditional style is pomegranate juice cooked down with sugar, Liber & Co. Real Grenadine is 65% cold-pressed pomegranate juice with orange blossom water, and Small Hand Foods, Jack Rudy, BG Reynolds and Eli Mason all make similar juice-based syrups. The mass-market style skips the fruit entirely. Rose's Grenadine, the bottle behind most American bars, lists high fructose corn syrup, water, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, Red 40, natural and artificial flavors, and Blue 1. There is no pomegranate juice in it at all, but there is also no wheat, barley, rye or malt.

Monin tags its grenadine "Gluten Free", as an attribute, not a statement. The word "Gluten" appears exactly once on Monin's product page, inside a list of dietary attributes: "Allergen Free, Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Halal, Kosher, No Artificial Colors…". There is no prose about gluten, no threshold, no certifier and no testing claim. That is worth something, a manufacturer does not tag a product gluten-free casually, but an attribute chip sitting next to Halal and Kosher is label-level evidence, not a manufacturer statement addressing gluten, and this page tiers it C accordingly. It is still the only first-party gluten tag we located across the category.

The one soft spot is "natural and artificial flavors." Ingredient-screening databases, Spoonful and Fig among them, flag Rose's as "may or may not be gluten-free" because of that line, not because of anything else on the label. This is an automated caution applied to every product with an unspecified flavour blend, not a finding about grenadine. Two things make it low-stakes here. Under US allergen labelling law, wheat must be declared on the panel even when it arrives inside a flavour blend, and barley malt appears on ingredient lists as "malt", "malt extract" or "barley malt", a word that does not appear on any grenadine we checked.

No celiac organisation publishes a grenadine ruling, which is why this page sits at tier C rather than tier B. The verdict rests on published ingredient declarations plus one manufacturer claim. That is solid, but it is not the same as Beyond Celiac putting its name to it, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Grenadine is non-alcoholic. It is a syrup, not a liqueur, so none of the distillation questions that dominate the rest of the drinks aisle apply. Where grenadine gets you into trouble is the drink it goes into, not the syrup itself.

How much risk is this?

Celiac disease: grenadine is fine. Scan the ingredient line once for "malt" and you are done. If you want a bottle whose maker has at least tagged it gluten-free rather than leaving you to read the panel, buy Monin.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity: no issue.

Wheat allergy: also fine. Wheat is one of the nine US major allergens and must be disclosed on the label even if it is hidden inside a flavouring, so a grenadine that does not name wheat does not contain it.

Cross-contact: minimal. Syrup bottling lines handle sugar, juice and flavourings, not flour. The realistic cross-contact risk with grenadine happens at the bar (a shared jigger, a garnish tray, a bartender who just poured a beer), not at the factory.

What to have instead

You do not need to replace grenadine. These are the bottles worth reaching for, and one thing to sidestep:

Worth sidestepping: grenadine-flavoured premixed drinks and slush mixes, which are a different product category with much longer ingredient lists, and anything at a bar poured from an unlabelled speed-rail bottle when you cannot ask what is in it.

The panel is corn syrup, water, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate, Red 40, natural and artificial flavors and Blue 1. Keurig Dr Pepper publishes no gluten-free claim for it, which is why screening apps hedge on the flavour line. Practically safe; formally unconfirmed.

Does grenadine contain alcohol? No. Commercial grenadine is a non-alcoholic syrup, which is why it turns up in kids' drinks. A handful of craft producers add a tiny amount of spirit as a preservative, check the label if that matters to you.

Is pomegranate molasses gluten-free? Yes. It is reduced pomegranate juice, sometimes with sugar and lemon. Nothing in it comes from a grain.

Are cocktail mixers generally gluten-free? Most are: juices, syrups, tonic, soda and bitters are all typically fine. The exceptions to actually watch are anything malt-based, some Bloody Mary mixes that contain soy sauce or Worcestershire made with barley malt vinegar, and premixed cocktails built on a malt beverage base rather than a spirit.
