Why

Almost every canned "hard tea" in a US cooler is a flavoured malt beverage. That is a legal and manufacturing category, not a marketing word: the alcohol is produced by mashing and fermenting malted barley, exactly as in beer, and then stripping the beer flavour out and adding tea, lemonade or fruit. The barley gluten is still in the can. Twisted Tea (Boston Beer's own long-running hard tea brand, and the market leader in the category), is a malt beverage for this reason.

Sun Cruiser was deliberately built the other way round. Boston Beer launched it in March 2024 as a spirits-based ready-to-drink product: real vodka plus naturally brewed tea, 4.5% ABV, non-carbonated. The company's launch announcement and trade coverage both describe it explicitly as vodka-based, and that is the whole point of the brand's positioning against Twisted Tea. When the alcohol comes from a distilled spirit rather than a fermented barley mash, there is no barley gluten to carry forward.

Two independent reasons this holds up. First, distillation removes gluten proteins, Beyond Celiac and the Celiac Disease Foundation both treat distilled spirits as gluten-free regardless of the starting grain, so the vodka is safe even before you ask what it was distilled from. Second, and more decisively, Boston Beer makes an affirmative gluten-free statement on its own site. That is a manufacturer claim about this product, not an inference from what is in the can.

The FAQ also addresses allergens generally, stating the product contains no common allergens and specifically no milk, egg, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nut, peanut or soy derivatives.

One honest limitation. Boston Beer does not publish a full quantitative ingredient panel for Sun Cruiser, and there is no third-party certification mark (GFCO or similar) on the can. Retail listings describe the label text as vodka with tea, natural flavours and sweeteners, with real juice in several flavours, but retailer-transcribed ingredient data is not authoritative. The verdict rests on the manufacturer's own statement, which is enough, but it is worth knowing exactly what it rests on.

How much risk is this?

Celiac disease: Sun Cruiser is a reasonable choice. You have a direct manufacturer gluten-free statement plus a production method that gives gluten no route into the can. This is a materially stronger position than most canned cocktails, where the answer is usually inferred from an ingredient list.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity: no issue.

Wheat allergy: vodka is not wheat-derived in a way that survives distillation, and no wheat ingredient is declared. If your allergy is severe enough that you avoid grain-distilled spirits entirely, Sun Cruiser does not publish its vodka's base grain, ask Boston Beer consumer relations.

The realistic risk is the wrong can. Sun Cruiser and Twisted Tea sit in the same fridge, come from the same company, and are both "hard tea." One is safe, one is not. Read the can, every time, and specifically look for the word "vodka."
